Measuring blood sugar is an integral part of managing diabetes or prediabetes, and gives a snapshot of your blood sugar at that moment in time.

An A1C test measures blood glucose differently, and gives an average of your blood sugar levels over the last 3 months. The A1C test provides better insight into you overall blood sugar management over time.

An A1C test is one of the main blood tests that can help diagnose prediabetes or diabetes. If you are 40 years of age or older, you should have an A1C test at least once every 3 years. If you have additional risk factors for diabetes your may need more frequent A1C tests or to initiate them earlier.
